Rebel Wilson may have looked chic in a black and hot pink cape dress on the blue carpet at the MTV Movie Awards, but it was what she wore onstage that was truly impressive.
On Sunday, Wilson, who was at the event to premiere a clip from her upcoming film Pitch Perfect 2, changed into leather leggings, a beaded bra with dangling fringe, big white angel wings, and black, winged sneakers. The bottom of her pants had the word “THINK” written in big, crystal-embellished block letters. While it was clear that Wilson was emulating Victoria’s Secret models (the brand’s bottoms often feature the word “PINK”), Wilson added, “At least everyone can take solace in the fact that my look resembles a proper burrito and not a stand-and-stuff taco.”
The actress, who has always been self-deprecatingly positive about her lack of sample size, has always encouraged other women to embrace themselves the same way she does, so much so that she is confident in her character Fat Amy. During a press conference after the show, she further explained her look. “Bella Girls [in Pitch Perfect] Everyone has a different body type, size, and nationality. I think one of the good messages of this movie is that everyone is beautiful. Some girls look at Victoria’s Secret models and think they have to be models, but I don’t think that’s the best thing,” she says. “Even if they’re called models, they’re not worthy of being models. I want other girls to think the same way. That’s why I wrote it on my butt. Because what’s really important is what’s here.” [pointing to her head] And it’s different from what’s here [then pointing to her butt].”
The ensemble was specially made for her. Shady ZaindeldinWilson, a Dubai-based designer who has also designed corsets for Madonna and Lady Gaga, seems to be openly joining the many other companies and people who have recently accused lingerie stores of imposing inappropriate body standards. Lane Bryant recently launched a rival ad campaign called #ImNoAngel, featuring models of different body types — Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Candice Huffine, Victoria Lee, Justine LeGoutan and Ellie Mayday. A Change.org petition was signed and led to changes being made to Victoria’s Secret’s ads.
What the fight for a shift in body standards really needs is someone to lead a major shift in how women are talked about and treated in the media and beyond. Wilson’s stunt seems to put her at the forefront. As the saying goes, the revolution will be televised. And Wilson has done just that.
