Regular gasoline prices have fallen by an average of 6 cents per litre in cities across Canada over the past week, following predictions earlier this month that summer price peaks are over.
Sarnia, Ontario, recorded a double-digit drop, dropping 16.1 cents between Aug. 15 and Aug. 22. Cities with the biggest price declines included Kingston, Ontario; Gatineau, Quebec; and Abbotsford, British Columbia. North Bay, Ontario was one of the few markets where prices increased.
The broad-based decline follows a rise in fuel prices in July. Gasoline prices rose 2.4 percent from June, according to Statistics Canada’s latest inflation figures. Prices in July were up 1.9 percent from a year earlier, in part due to reduced supply caused by refinery closures in the U.S. Midwest, the agency said.
New-vehicle sales rose in the coastal states last month, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, which said sales rose to 161,000 vehicles.
“The Atlantic coastline in particular saw strong sales increases this month, with an estimated 41.2 per cent increase in Newfoundland, 39.7 per cent increase in Prince Edward Island, 31.6 per cent increase in Nova Scotia and 22 per cent increase in New Brunswick,” Des Rogers researchers wrote Wednesday.
