A week after Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack into Russia’s Kursk region, Russian forces have been scrambling to regain control.
Ukraine troops who launched the surprise incursion across the border claim to control around 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.
Russia has deployed missiles and airstrikes in its attempt to contain the Ukrainian advance as the Kremlin attempts to play down the significance of the surprise attack. It is continuing to evacuate Russian civilians from the area.
Ukraine has not stated the purpose of its assault and has made clear that it is not seeking to permanently occupy Russian territory. However the shock attack has served to boost morale within Ukraine, more than two years after it was invaded by President Putin’s forces and it may serve to draw Russian forces away from frontline fighting within Ukraine.

All those SW Russian oblasts are formerly Ukrainian territories populated in a large %% by ethnic Ukrainians. There is no resistance because many locals just see Ukrainians are their own people.
So, Ukrainians can now call it "settling up".
If the Russians want SE of Ukraine, Ukraine will want SW of Russia.

To address the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in a way that minimizes hostilities and prevents future escalations, including invasions or attacks, Ukraine can consider various diplomatic, defensive, and international collaboration strategies. These strategies should be multifaceted and aim both at immediate resolution of the conflict and at creating an environment of long-term stability and peace.
Diplomatic Strategies
Peace Negotiations: Ukraine could actively seek to resume peace negotiations with the mediation of international bodies such as the UN, OSCE, or even neutral powers that can facilitate dialogue.
Multilateral Diplomacy: Work with international allies and partners to form a strong coalition that can exert diplomatic pressure on Russia to stop hostilities.
Defensive Reinforcement
Strengthening Defenses: Continue to strengthen military capabilities with the support of international allies, not only to deter further aggression, but also to secure areas already affected by conflict.
Cybersecurity: Improve cyber defense infrastructure to protect against cyber attacks that could destabilize the country.
International Collaboration
Economic Sanctions: Advocate that the international community maintain or intensify economic sanctions against Russia to deter continued aggression.
Humanitarian and Economic Support: Seek humanitarian and economic assistance to support the war-affected population and strengthen the Ukrainian economy.
Legal Strategies
International Courts: Use international legal platforms to denounce any illegal actions or war crimes, seeking accountability and legal consequences for the actors involved.
Defending Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity: Continue to defend sovereignty and territorial integrity in international forums, ensuring that international laws and norms are respected.
Communication and Propaganda
Information Campaigns: Conduct information campaigns to ensure that both the Ukrainian and international public are well informed about developments in the conflict, countering disinformation.
International Solidarity: Foster international solidarity through campaigns that showcase the human consequences of the conflict and the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
Emergency Response Preparedness
Contingency Planning: Develop and maintain up-to-date contingency plans in the event of major escalations, including possible nuclear attacks or large-scale invasions.
Early Warning Systems and Civil Protection: Enhance early warning systems and civil protection capabilities to minimize civilian casualties in the event of attacks.
Implementing these strategies requires a coordinated approach that combines domestic resilience with robust international support. The goal must always be to seek a peaceful solution that secures Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, minimizes human suffering, and stabilizes the region in the long term.

Putin isn't a brave president, he is just a miserable dictator.

Russians should not be concerned. Their government will now flatten Kursk, turn it into rubble and non productive for the next 10 years. There's plenty of land and abandoned villages in the arctic for the evacuees.
