The first hearing in the legal battle between BTS member V and Jungkook against “Taldeok Camp” operator A is being held today.
The first hearing of the 90 million won (approximately $68,000) damages lawsuit filed by BTS members V and Jungkook against the operators of the YouTube channel “Taldeok Camp” is scheduled to be held today, August 23rd (Korean Standard Time).
Presiding Judge Lee Kwang-hyun of the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court will hold the first hearing at 10:10 a.m. The lawsuit filed by BTS’s agency Big Hit Music is based on claims of defamation and other damages due to A’s actions.
In March, BTS members V and Jungkook filed a lawsuit against A, seeking 90 million won in damages. Big Hit Music confirmed on the 16th that the lawsuit is moving forward.
Prior to this, Big Hit Music said on the 28th, “In 2022, we filed criminal charges against ‘Deduction Asylum’ on suspicion of defamation and obstruction of business, but the investigation was temporarily suspended. However, after securing the personal information of the operators, we actively requested that the investigation be resumed, and it is currently ongoing. We also filed a civil lawsuit earlier this year for defamation and other illegal acts, and the trial is approaching.”
“Taldeok Camp” is a notorious cyber “scumbags” (a term for YouTubers who create and spread sensationalized content for views) who produced and distributed videos spreading unfounded rumors about BTS members over the course of several months in 2021.
On December 29, 2021 (Korean time), BTS’s agency filed additional lawsuits against netizens who posted defamatory, insulting, sexually harassing, false, and malicious content about BTS. They said, “We are taking strong legal action against those who attack the personalities of our artists and spread baseless and malicious rumors. We are taking all possible legal action, both criminal and civil, against those who repeatedly engage in such behavior on platforms such as YouTube.”
The agency further emphasized, “We will make it clear that those who commit crimes will be held accountable under both criminal and civil laws and will not be able to escape responsibility, and we will pursue maximum compensation. We will continue to take strict measures without any room for compromise or leniency to prevent heinous acts from being repeated.”
V, who is also a victim of rumours, directly criticised the operators of “Taldeok Camp”. On December 20, 2021 (Korean time), V came across a screenshot of the “Taldeok Camp” video posted by a fan on BTS’s fan community platform Weverse. In response, V commented, “What? I’m going ahead with the lawsuit. I’ll even cover the cost of snacks. They’re even involving their family and friends. Bye.” He continued, “I took a quick look and it’s not just us. All artists hate those kinds of people. It doesn’t matter if ARMY is watching this or not, I will file a lawsuit on behalf of all the hurt people who didn’t have the courage.”
