ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls tennis team continued its momentum from Monday with a 7-1 win over Menominee on Thursday.
Maggie Martin won 6-2, 6-0 over Menominee’s Elena Murphy.
“You’ve got to know where your guy is,” Martin said, “and just get your shots away from him and aim close to the line.”
Martin’s first set featured some long games, back-and-forth action and long points.
“Maggie did a great job of building momentum after the first set,” Eskimos coach Chris Ogren said, “and in the second set she really showed why she’s so hard to beat.”
The No. 2 singles match between Escanaba senior Samantha Korpi and Menominee’s Mackenzie Doyle was closer than the score would suggest, with Korpi dropping both sets 2-6, 1-6.
“Samantha was down 5-0 in the first set, but then she really relaxed and won the next two games,” Ogren said.
At No. 3 singles, Escanaba sophomore Sophie Hill defeated Menominee’s Delaney Wagner 6-2, 6-3 in a hard-fought match.
“Sophie showed tenacity throughout the match,” Ogren said. “She really played to her strengths to win the second set.”
Escanaba’s doubles teams continued their strong performance from the start of the season. Hannah Cady and Brooke Miron won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 doubles, while Sonia Maki and Anna Martin won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. “Our doubles team looked very clean again today,” Ogren said. “It was good to see them playing with confidence.”
Escanaba is scheduled to travel to Kingsford today.
