Former US President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday, when a gunman shot him three times at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, just days before he was due to accept the Republican presidential nomination in November. The bullets struck Trump in his right ear and he was quickly taken to hospital. The day after the assassination attempt, The New York Times published an opinion piece that was slammed by billionaire Elon Musk.

“The New York Times published this article today about Trump. They are truly cold-hearted and vile people. They have no empathy whatsoever,” Elon Musk said in a post. He also shared a photo of the opinion section, which read, “He has failed the test of leadership and betrayed America. Voters must reject him in November.” (Related article: Did The Simpsons predict the assassination attempt on Donald Trump? Various theories fly online.)

Elon Musk said on Sunday that he has been the target of two assassination attempts in the past eight months. In his post, Musk said, “Dangerous times ahead. Two people have already tried to kill me in the past eight months (on separate occasions). They were arrested at gunpoint about a 20-minute drive from Tesla headquarters in Texas.” Musk also donated to Trump’s election campaign and stated that he would support Trump as the next president, saying, “The last person in America to have a tough candidate was Theodore Roosevelt.” (Related article: The story of Trump’s iconic photo after the assassination attempt, and video showing Evan Vucci taking the photo)
Musk claimed in 2022 that media outlets had published his “assassination coordinates” and discussed his real-time whereabouts. Journalists had published the location of Musk’s private plane using publicly available flight records, making it available to viewers. Musk’s company, X, suspended the journalists’ accounts.
