ELKINS — The Elkins High School boys and girls soccer teams defeated Preston in a Big Ten Conference game Tuesday night at Tiger Stadium.
In the first game of the night, the Tigers won 2-0, scoring goals in both the first and second halves.
Lucas D’Angelo, who was named player of the match at Monday’s Big Ten Golf Championship, gave Elkins a 1-0 lead off a corner kick 30 minutes into the match.
Andrew Tesar also scored from a corner kick in the 28th minute of the second half to make the score 2-0.
“The guys played really well tonight,” said Scott Cutright, who coaches both teams this season. “We had possession for most of the game and did a good job of preventing their counterattacks. We took advantage of our set pieces and that was what made the difference between winning and losing the game.”
“We have a big game on Thursday against a very good Lewis County team.”
The Tigers currently have 6 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw.
Three Lady Tiger players scored goals in the final minutes of the game to secure a 3-0 victory.
Layla Fletcher put them ahead in the 38th minute, before Lily Doyle and Darby Bailey added goals in the 16th and 13th minutes of the second half respectively.
“I’m really proud of how our girls bounced back from the loss over the weekend (to Winfield),” Cutright said. “We held the ball the whole game and moved it with ease, which resulted in one of our best performances of the season.”
“We need to keep the positive momentum going into the final stages of the season.”
Elkins (8-2-1) will visit Lewis County on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with the boys game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
FAIRMONT — The game between the Elkins Middle School boys soccer team and East Fairmont ended in a 1-1 tie Monday night.
