In late June of this year, Guy “Dr. Disrespect” Beam, one of the world’s most famous (or infamous) streamers, posted a shocking confession on Twitter, in which the gaming celebrity revealed why he was banned from Twitch a few years ago: He had been exchanging private messages with minors that he said “sometimes veered too far in the direction of inappropriateness,” but denied being a predator or pedophile.
Now, “Doc,” as he’s affectionately known by his rapidly dwindling fanbase, has deleted the tweet entirely. The most recent tweet from his Twitter/X account is a cryptic photo posted on August 1st that shows the streamer with his hands clasped behind a board that contains half a chess piece and half a checker piece.
Of course, you can never completely remove something from the internet. Gaming personality Jake Lackey quickly posted to his own Twitter account a screenshot of Beam’s original statement, which had been heavily edited when he first posted it.
Whatever Doc was planning, I doubt he will be able to truly revive his career and reputation. There are lines that should not (and should not) be crossed, and inappropriate messages to minors is one of them. The Midnight Society, a gaming company he helped found, severed ties with Beam before his statement, and he was banned or demonetized almost everywhere. Perhaps he will find a new platform (Rumble or Twitter), but a real comeback is unlikely, even if Dr. Disrespect returns. He may also just be trolling everyone to see what buzz he can create with these tweets and deletions. We’ll see what happens.
update:
Shortly after posting this, Dr. Disrespect tweeted the following to his followers:
“I’m on holiday too much right now. But I’ll be back soon, Champs. There’s so much to talk about. Yay yay yay yay yay.”
I think we’ll have a lot to talk about soon.
