Seven years after his last film, Daniel Day-Lewis returns from retirement for a film directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis.
The project was announced Tuesday by Focus Features and Plan B, who are partnering on “Anemone.” The film marks the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, who stars alongside Sean Bean and Samantha Morton as his father. The film was co-written by two members of the Day-Lewis family.
Earlier on Tuesday, Daniel Day-Lewis and Bean were spotted riding bikes through Manchester, England, sparking curiosity about his impending return to acting. The 67-year-old said he was quitting acting after making Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film Phantom Thread.
“All my life I’ve said that I should quit acting. I don’t know why it was different this time, but the urge to quit was so ingrained in me that it became an obsession. ” he told the W program. Magazine of 2017. “It was something I had to do.”
Since then, his public appearances have become rare. But in January, he made a surprise appearance at the National Board of Review Awards, where he was honored by Gangs of New York (2002) and Age of Innocence (1993) director Martin Scorsese. The award was presented to the director.
Anemone, which is currently in production, is described as exploring “the complex relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, and the dynamics of family bonds.”
Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is a painter who has previously exhibited his work in New York. His first international solo exhibition debuts in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
Peter Kujowski, Chairman of Focus Features, said: “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with such an outstanding visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on our first feature film, with Daniel Day-Lewis as our creative collaborator. There is no such thing.” “They have written a truly amazing script, and we look forward to working with the Plan B team to bring their shared vision to audiences.”
