The name Hugh Prestwood may be unknown to most country music fans, but that’s because he was a true legend in his craft.
Mr. Prestwood, the songwriter who penned some of country music’s greatest hits, has reportedly died from a stroke.

He was 82 years old.
“Hugh Prestwood, who wrote such huge hits as Randy Travis’ “Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart” and Trisha Yearwood’s “The Song Remembers When,” announced on September 22nd that ,” the Country Music Hall of Fame wrote in a post to X. “The Texas native writes solo material and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006.”
Prestwood was reportedly first discovered by Judy Collins, for whom he wrote her first hit, “Hard Time for Lovers,” in 1978. Rolling Stone magazine said Prestwood was “one of Nashville’s most respected and in-demand songwriters since the late ’70s.” Until the mid 90’s. ”
Yearwood also wrote about Prestwood’s death on social media.
“Hugh Prestwood was a poet,” she wrote. “‘The Song Remembers When’ is one of the best songs ever written and I’m the lucky girl to sing it. It’s a beautiful depiction of the power of music.
“We’re all lucky that Hugh decided to become a writer,” she continued. “I’m going to miss his voice.”
