The value of currency is that it renders items as different as a banana or a TV all down to the same measurable units. But are calories really an effective “currency” for measuring weight loss? Dr. Jason Fung joined THINK to make the case against calories.

Counting Calories Is A Ridiculous Way To Try And Lose Weight | Think | NBC News

This guy is just denying the basics of thermodynamics
"" 1917" "
A calorie is a measurement of heat energy…
All this guy succeeded in doing is making people more confused by overcomplicating calories and weight loss. And at the same time he offers no real solution after his explanation….
But your body still needs some bare minimum, even if you provide no input calories. So the equation is still valid, but yes, your body will try to adjust to a lower income – but since this is not possible to do indefinitely, you will lose weight / fat. Add some exercise and there is no way that your body will do that exercise on 0 calories, otherwise you just found the perpetuum mobile.
I like the part where he doesn't offer a solution.
People, counting calories makes you more aware of what you eat. As long as you're in a caloric deficit and reach your daily goal, it won't matter that "AcTuAlLy, CaLoRiEs ArEn'T eQuAl".
talk about disinfo
he doesn't get why people fail diets. Counting calories is the best way to ensure a sustainable energy deficit. If you hate the food you eat or the deficit is too large, most people will just fail the diet and gain the weight back.
LAME 👎 …. Meanwhile, all the non-doctorate “regular” people like me, are shaking our heads at your stupidity. You literally just said calorie counters do it because it’s easy. And for people like me, it is the ONLY way I’ve lost weight. We do it because it works. If we take the time to do all these calculations like you’re doing it, we’d not have time to leave the couch. Count calories, get down to a weight that your body can better handle working out without damaging itself from all the previous weight, and THEN worry about the fat as it burns off. You are the ridiculous one, not us.
It’s essential to count calories you can’t get your goals if you don’t know how much you’re eating
A calorie deficit is a supposedly a stupid way to lose weight but it's the only one that you can quantify and that works 100% of the time. Yes, the quality of food is important for nutrition and overall health benefits but that doesn't mean that you don't have to be in a caloric deficit to lose weight. You can eat junk and lose weight if you're in a caloric deficit. I've done it, I've seen people do it and I'm doing it again right now as we speak.
This crusade against calories being the key factor to weight is extremely stupid and very disingenuous. Apparently, it appeals to lazy people who don't want to deal with reality.
Hence why no one should only focus on calories alone, but:
1) on the quality of those calories
2) on building muscle mass (no you don't have to become a fisioculturist, but you need to have some muscle)
3) on exercising frequently (cardio/flexibility etc..)
If your nutritionist or fitness professional is telling you just to reduce the calories without any of the rest then they are not doing the job.
What doctor there is saying is the same as someone telling you that if you only focus on the steering wheel you wont be able to drive, you also need to work the pedals, shifts, road rules and knowledge etc..
Calorie is calorie!
This is why you have to keep cutting cals. The body WILL adjust to ANYTHING.
However if daily exercise is added to offset the metabolism adjustment combined with healthy caloric reduction you will have a weight loss.
What a clown. They should take his doctor away.
I am in the best shape of my life and my mid 50s thanks to counting calories. Obviously I’m eating healthier too. And working out. But I could not do it without counting calories.
Counting calories works if your goal is losing weight. It’s science.
Music at the background, is annoying
I have lost 89 Lbs now by eating Doritos, burgers and cookies. Just count your calories. It literally doesn’t matter at all what you eat as long as you don’t go over
Yea you can tell this guy tried it, found it was too hard and to feel good about himself, made up some bs.
So exercise to gain muscle that use those calories therefore you'll need more calories for maintenance
This perfectly explains why calorie counting is not perfect and we cannot accurately count them, but it doesn't debunk the basic thermodynamic fact that setting a calorie limit can help you lose weight.
Knowing what you're eating and how much it will fatten you if essential to losing weight.
I lost 40+ pounds counting calories. Every diet works by reducing calories. This video is so negative for people trying to loose weight because it creates confusion. My god I'm thankful for not watching it when I was starting my weight loss journey
Wasn't there a study where a guy lost weight just eating twinkies?
Half a mil views and only 8k likes tells me all I need to know
Counting calories DOES WORK. nothing else works for me. As soon as i stop counting, i gain weight.
Yeah no this is crazy at this point imma just do what I think is right I’ll eat healthy foods and some unhealthy foods .I’ll work out to stay healthy. how to lose weight? Caloric deficit
Can I drop my calor to zero in and zero out, Eureka I’ve created perpetual energy !!
agreed!!! calories are complete bs!!! Thanks Fung!!!!
This doctor should stick to his chosen field of nephrology, there's no other way to lose weight other than taking in less calories than you burn (except surgically)
He's right about not all calories being the same, personally I go out of my way to eat more protein as I find it satiates me more and I've been able to keep 20 pounds off for 4 years
One might overeat even while intermittent fasting. Counting calories can help control portion sizes.
