LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Titan Solar, which has ceased operations in Nevada and is seeking federal bankruptcy protection, is a serious threat to the public, the state’s Board of Contractors announced Wednesday.
On Tuesday, News Now 8 Investigators first reported that Titan Solar had failed to show up to the board’s disciplinary hearing, but the hearing eventually went ahead and fined Titan Solar $400,000. An administrative judge found the company guilty of 70 charges against 29 homeowners.
“Titan Solar has caused significant harm and posed a serious threat to the public health, safety and welfare,” Administrative Judge Richard Scotti said during the hearing.
Among the charges the commission found Titan Solar guilty of were failing to complete projects on time, substandard workmanship issues, working with unlicensed contractors and performing work not permitted by Titan’s license.

“Titan Solar has proven unable to meet its responsibilities and has caused great harm to consumers who entrusted the company with their trust and resources,” said Marge Grein, executive director of the contractors’ board of directors. Grein is retiring in August.
“The commission’s focus right now is directing homeowners to the Home Recovery Fund and finding opportunities for financial relief,” Grain said of the commission’s Home Recovery Fund, which allows homeowners who sustained damages caused by properly licensed contractors to recoup some of their funds, up to a maximum of $40,000.
But some homeowners at Tuesday’s hearing have suffered losses in excess of the maximum amount of $40,000.

“For me, I’m very happy that they’re no longer operating in this state or this country,” said Charlene Cutler, a homeowner who testified before the committee.
Titan has filed for bankruptcy at its locations across 40 states, public records show.
The president of Titan’s Nevada operations will face separate disciplinary action at a board hearing in mid-October.
