UAE Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said that advanced transportation systems have increased the UAE’s competitiveness.
The UAE Rail Program is pivotal in shaping the future of the transport sector and is focused on developing a national rail network that connects the seven emirates, major cities, ports and industrial zones across the country. This initiative aims to create significant economic opportunities and jobs within the railway and its supporting sectors.
Government initiatives on connectivity
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, underlined the importance of the program and noted its role in strengthening connectivity and economic development. In a recent interview with the News Agency of the Emirates (WAM) at the World Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference – Global Rail 2024, he spoke about how the transport sector is actively contributing to the growth of intra-regional trade and freight transport in the UAE. Impact on trade and economic competitiveness
Al Mazrouei further revealed that in 2023, 22% of the UAE’s non-oil trade will be transported by road, amounting to AED 576.4 billion ($156.9 billion). He pointed out that advanced transport systems strengthen the UAE’s competitiveness in this important sector. He pointed out that there has been a steady growth in freight volumes and service quality of various companies, especially in the Etihad Rail project.

Future developments in passenger transport
Additionally, the passenger transport phase is scheduled to begin by the end of 2025, which will provide a vital link between all emirates and the country’s major tourist destinations. Furthermore, Mr. Al Mazrouei pointed out the importance of the Hafeet Railway Network project, which will be the fastest rail connection between the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman, with significant participation of banks in financing this strategic initiative. He explained that this will come true.
Vision for regional connections and growth
Mr. Al Mazrouei also expressed optimism about the economic underpinnings of the project, noting its potential to work with other Gulf Cooperation Council countries to promote prosperity, development and growth.
