On July 23, Bryson DeChambeau released a video of himself playing golf with former US President Donald Trump. As part of YouTube’s “Breaking 50” series, DeChambeau and Trump played a scramble from the forward tee.
The video was created as part of a charity effort to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, and as of noon EST on July 26th, had raised just under $30,000 and been viewed 7.75 million times.
“First of all, it’s an honor to play with such an influential person, regardless of their political stance,” DeChambeau told media ahead of this week’s LIV golf event in the U.K. “Again, this whole piece, the content creation part, was just to put out unique and different content on YouTube, and I wanted to showcase the golfing abilities of influential people, and he was definitely high on the list that I wanted to feature.
“He’s obviously someone who can get a big audience, so we thought it’d be great to showcase his golfing prowess. He’s a pretty good golfer. It was a lot of fun.”
It wasn’t a huge surprise to see Trump featured on DeChambeau’s channel, as the former president is heavily involved with the LIV golf league and has hosted several events at his own golf course.
Despite Trump’s Republican ties, DeChambeau said he reached out to Democrats to see if anyone there would be interested in speaking.
“We reached out to the opposing team and to anyone who wanted to play,” he said. “They’re willing to do something for charity. I wanted it to be about charity and the Wounded Warriors Fund. I’ve done a lot for them in the past and it was great to see that he was willing to support it as well. Anyone who wants to support a charity, I’d like to do a fundraiser for them and encourage a lot of support for whatever charity it is.”
“Whether it’s Obama or anyone else on that side, I’m happy to play with them. I have no problem with that. The best thing about golf is that it can be used to bring everybody together in a cool way. I think that’s the vision for global golf.”
“For me, inspiring the younger generation is so important, and that’s why I think this YouTube space is so cool because it shows everyone’s true colors. That’s what I’m trying to achieve and it’s definitely helped in that regard. I can’t wait to make it happen with others.”
Since the video was released, DeChambeau’s YouTube channel has surpassed 1 million subscribers.
Thank you so much for your continued support and joining me on this crazy journey. One million subscribers is so amazing and hard to comprehend. It wouldn’t have been possible without you all watching. Cheers to the amazing memories and moments to come! pic.twitter.com/m69lNlfZ6S
