The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to make some notable moves around their starting rotation ahead of the trade deadline on July 30.
With just a week until the deadline, there are plenty of rumors flying around the Brewers’ plans to bolster their roster for the postseason, with new names emerging.
“(Reid) Detmers is just a few seasons removed from a 3.77 ERA, but he struck out 168 batters in just 148 2/3 innings last season,” Yahoo Sports’ Russell Dorsey wrote Thursday night. “Several potential postseason contenders have reportedly inquired about the Angels’ left-hander, including the (Los Angeles) Dodgers, (Arizona) Diamondbacks, Brewers, (Cleveland) Guardians and (Houston) Astros.”
Detmers was a completely different man last season, pitching 63 innings in 12 games this season with a 6.14 ERA, 27-to-70 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .269 batting average against and a 1.48 WHIP, and is currently retooling his approach in Triple-A.
The 25-year-old is under team control through 2027 and has shown recently that he is more likely to be a project to work with than an immediate addition to the Brewers’ starting rotation.
The left-hander is young and has a promising future, but Milwaukee needs a proven starter who can help them reach the postseason. A trade shouldn’t be ruled out, but the Blue Crew may want to take trade talks in a different direction.
That being said, Detmers is garnering attention from some of the top championship contenders, so there should be confidence around the league that clubs will be able to train the pitcher and get him ready for October baseball.
