BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Police in Birmingham, Alabama are investigating a mass shooting that left many people caught in the crossfire, ultimately leaving four dead and 17 injured.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said in an email early Sunday morning that the shooting happened late Saturday night in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South, a popular entertainment district in the city.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond said at a news conference that authorities believe there was a target among the dead and that the shooting may have been an “assassination” carried out in exchange for money.
Investigators believe other victims were caught in the crossfire and that there may have been multiple shooters. More than 100 shell casings were found at the scene.

Thurmond said multiple suspects arrived on scene in a vehicle, got out and opened fire, then returned to their vehicles and fled.
Police said officers found two men and one woman on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third male shooting victim was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
By early Sunday morning, as victims began being transported to hospitals, police had identified 17 people injured, several with life-threatening injuries, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said in an email.
Authorities were asking the public for help in searching for the shooter.
