University of Michigan Law School professor and former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade joins Michael Kosta to discuss her new book, “Attack From Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.” She explains how “disinformation” — the deliberate use of lies — is different from misinformation, how tactics like declinism and nostalgia are being used by the far-right in the current election cycle, and how regular Americans can take control by advocating for social media regulations and staying media literate. #DailyShow #BarbaraMcQuade #Disinformation

I like he reminded that his joke was also kind of perpetuating of tribe over truth. Hope we all can be always conscious of that.
Disinformation is Kamala, and Timmy Walz, espousing the belief that men can get pregnant. That Joe Biden isn’t a racist – remember what he said about Obama being clean and Indian American Dunkin Donut owners. That the Secret Service didn’t allow Trump to get shot in the head. That Clooney, Obama and Hillary didn’t execute a coup
Yay Barb on TDS! Love listening to her analysis, and also she looks a lot like my mom. ♥
2025 was a leftwing misinformation campaign
To take Michael’s last point semi seriously: how about a media literacy test for anyone who wants to vote?
Great book, great interview.
Just a few quick questions. But first, I am not American, neither do I live in America.
So the questions:
You've cited the Republicans, specifically Trump and his lies (both dis-and mis-information about Kamala, etc)
Granted.
But do you think, Barbara, though you don't cite the Democrats, would you say there was dis- and mis-information by them? E.g., that Prez Biden was cognitively fit and capable only to u-turn after that disaster of a "debate"? Would you call yourself biased, and therefore batting for your side (tribal) with blinkers on?
Just a thought.
Would you say, every argument has 2 sides and no side, especially regarding your thesis regarding misleading false and harmful speech?
Anyway, I have no credentials like you so maybe I am speaking thru my….(don't want to be cited for dis infoemation).
Regards.
Maria Ressa has been saying this for over a decade. When is the world going to listen and act?
I love the Peppermint Patty that grew up to be a prosecutor and TV commentator
Just say no to both- sides-ism!!! 👊🏽
We all see what’s happening, and it’s dangerous to our democracy and our future! 🇺🇸✨
Barb for Attorney General 🎉
I love the video and the Daily Show. When you wonder how college students get brainwashed we can thank superwoke professors like McQuade who is acting that a campaign leader for the Democrats. Is crime down? Has she tried shopping at a drugstore and noticed that every item is locked up? I can give you a million examples of how crime is extremely high and no one living in reality feels safe. Also the very harmful disinformation continuously stated by the radical left that "Democracy is stake" and the dangers of Trump created an assignation attempt on him. The self righteous rhetoric of the radical left and their hate for Republicans needs to end as they control 95% of the media. Could you image if she wrote the same book criticizing the radical left fake news? She would be terminated from University of Michigan immediately.
Disinformation is by design. Misinformation is a mistake.
Here is one idea to teach our youth: equality and fairness are both admirable yet conflicting principles. Let us do our very best to balance each and make the best of both.
Elon Musk and ‘X’ has gone to the dark side!
"…a white right-handed fist…"
Any speech accidents in the comments so far?
Man this guy is super dumb. And if you are just playing the ‘dumb guy’ then maybe tone it back a bit
i realize it's all a "bit" but when the host says they read a headline and nothing else and carried it around as though it was fact initially and then spends time admonishing the audience about how they should do better, it really misses on tone. maybe it was his kinda awkward delivery throughout the piece but that just seemed really off.
Common sense reform will still stifle free speech, or invite the use of censorship, because someone else decides who is "right" and who is "wrong."
The "far right" is the one using misinformation disinformation tactics right now? 🧐😳 What do you base this judgment on? 🤔 Nevermind, the Daily show presenters usually side with the DP and against anyone who is opposite the DP's agenda.🤦🥺
THis stuff is so creepy because it has this underlying tone that the American right is doing all the bad lies when the democrat states probably have the most crime, most judicial corruption, most poverty and yet 'WE' are the conscious ones". (roll eyes)
Part of the brainwash is to convince the brainwashed that the ones trying to wake them up from the brainwash are the ones who are brainwashed. Once you are outside of the house of mirrors it all looks like a nuthouse.
If you go to the bastion cities that support this outlook they are full of homeless camps loaded on the newest drug where the criminals are released so I guess there is a drop in crime reported LOL.
This is like sophisticated Chairman Mao stuff. No one in their right mind would say things are looking up if you look at rent and food prices compared to just 5 years ago unless you are some geezer sheltered in academia land far far away from the reality of the everyday mom and pop. It is truly fiction.
Absolutely great explanation of the difference between disinformation and misinformation at the beginning!❤❤
If you're wondering what small thing you can do to make a difference is delete the social media apps from your phone. I don't mean to sound holler-than-thou about this. I'm not saying to delete your account. Only use it on your computer. Be conscientious about your use. Set time aside, sit down, and plug in. Just don't carry it in your pocket. It's a small thing, but I think would be helpful if we all did this. It also made me feel a lot better about life.
Get rid of Elon Musk, the Emporer of Lies.
I think the bottom line here is that freedom comes with responsibility. Regardless of my or your political or personal orientation, think about the world you live in before you act. Just try editing your own thoughts. Uh, did I just forget to do that?
The "can't yell fire in a crowded building" statement falls under the same umbrella as "blood is thicker than water" the phrase "fire in a crowded building" was written by a supreme court justice who used the sentiment to justify limiting free speech in the form of protesting the Vietnam War. The sentiment was later retracted as there are many reasonable situations wherein yelling fire Is appropriate
Exhibit A: "Bro that's FIRE" (outfit)
Exhibit B: Fire appears onscreen during a movie
Examples abound
The most important thing I ever learned in college was when I walked into my math class. On the board the professor put up a popular quote about a milk advertisement. I can’t recall the exact line but the point was that the ad was not being truthful and so she taught us to ALWAYS question what you hear, see or read, regardless of the source. Learn to make up your own mind w factual info.
America…did Stop the Steal. Thief being Trump. Luv another Lone Wolf McQuade…Stay Honest.
The far right is horrible, but establishment Democrats are just as easily manipulated by MSNBC and CNN feeding their narrative
