Official data shows government borrowing in July was above expectations and at its highest since the pandemic. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) expected borrowing to be £46.6bn – instead it reached £51.3bn. Scotland continues to struggle with the highest rate of drug-related deaths in Europe. Data from National Records of Scotland (NRS) showed there were a total of 1,172 deaths due to drug misuse in 2023 – a rise of 121 (12%) on the previous year. The record high was in 2020, when 1,339 people died. Sky’s Connor Gillies speaks to former addict Scott Richards who has now set up his own recovery group in Scotland.
