Thomas Cashman has been found guilty of murdering Olivia Pratt-Korbel. The nine-year-old was shot dead as Cashman chased a convicted drug dealer into her home in Liverpool last year. The 34-year-old admitted to being a “high-level” drug dealer but denied being the gunman in the incident – which also injured Olivia’s mother and Joseph Nee, the intended target. A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Cashman guilty of the murder of Olivia and the attempted murder of Nee – as well as wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Olivia’s mother, Cheryl Korbel. More than 150 people have now been charged in court over the recent riots, according to the Ministry of Justice, which said 118 had been remanded behind bars. A man described in court as “an instigator and a leader” of recent riots in Blackpool has been jailed for two and half years. Roger Haywood pleaded guilty today at Preston Crown Court to violent disorder and two offences of assaulting an emergency worker. Over 100 people have now been sentenced for their parts in the disturbances. source
Five senior staff at a pro-democracy tabloid newspaper in Hong Kong have been arrested, in another sign of the Chinese government’s crackdown on dissent. Doctors in India are to stage a 24 hour strike, in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The 31-year-old woman was attacked in a Kolkata hospital room where she had been taking a break during a long shift.
