The leaders of Russia and China have arrived in Kazakhstan for a regional security gathering. Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are in the Kazakh capital Astana for the two-day meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The annual event has been dominated by China and Russia, as they seek to shape regional developments since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Putin is also due to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the leaders of Azerbaijan, Mongolia and Pakistan before an informal dinner hosted by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. 980 people in the UK have died in hospital from coronavirus in the past 24 hours – that’s higher than Spain or Italy’s worst daily death tolls. The UN Security Council voted 14-1 in support of the US-proposed Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan on Monday. The proposal sets out conditions for a “full and complete ceasefire”, the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of deceased hostages’ remains and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. The plan includes three phases that would end with a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza, which has been largely destroyed due to the fighting. TikTok has announced a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. If young people hit the new limit, they will have to enter a passcode to continue to use the service that day. But they will be able to opt out of the new measure, which TikTok said will be rolled out “in the coming weeks”. A video that appears to show Myanmar police officers beating members of the Muslim Rohingya minority during a security operation has emerged on Burmese social media. Banksy has confirmed that he is behind a new artwork that appeared in north London on Sunday. The street artist uploaded before and after pictures of the Finsbury Park mural to social media on Monday. It shows green paint sprayed on a wall behind a cut-back tree to look like foliage, with a stencil of a person holding a sprayer next to it. McDonald’s has been hit by its first fall in global sales since the start of the pandemic in 2020 as consumers cut back on spending. Outlets open for at least a year saw sales fall 1% over the April-June period compared with a year earlier.
