Ukraine says its forces are “holding on”. But Russian troops are now attacking in five areas along the 1,100km (700 mile) front line. UK police have issued a statement on behalf of Russian spy Sergei Skripal’s daughter, the first since the pair were poisoned by a nerve agent in March. “I woke up over a week ago now and am glad to say my strength is growing daily,” the statement says. The news came hours after Russia TV aired a recording of an alleged phone conversation, which it says took place between Ms Skripal and her cousin. Conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has prompted concerns from the US that it risks turning into a wider regional war. The two sides have exchanged fire across the Lebanon-Israel border in recent weeks. Hezbollah said it is fighting Israel to support Hamas in Gaza. Israel’s military said that operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon had been “approved and validated”. The US sent its envoy to both sides of the border this week to try to resolve the conflict and to try and find diplomatic solution. The United Nations’ top court has ruled that Israel must “immediately halt its military offensive” in Rafah in southern Gaza. The International Court of Justice, which decides disputes between countries, says “the catastrophic situation” in Gaza had deteriorated and described humanitarian conditions in Rafah as “disastrous.”   The judges also said the Rafah border crossing with Egypt must be opened for the entry of humanitarian aid “at scale”. South Africa had asked the ICJ to make the order as an emergency measure, saying Israel’s actions in Rafah amount to a “genocidal” operation and threatened the survival of the Palestinian people.…

Turkey’s main opposition party has claimed big election victories in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara. The results are a significant blow for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the cities less than a year after he claimed a third term as president. The UK’s data watchdog is assessing a report that staff at the hospital where Catherine, Princess of Wales had surgery tried to view her private health information. It has been claimed that staff at the London Clinic “attempted to access her private medical reports”. The Information Commissioners’ Office (ICO) confirmed it received a “breach report” and is making inquiries.
