The attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania exposed a series of security lapses that allowed the gunman to mount his assassination attempt. The gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to access a roof around 130 meters from the podium where Mr Trump was speaking. There’s rising concern about a growing number of attacks on journalists and human rights activists in Pakistan – allegedly at the hands of the country’s powerful intelligence services. Last week one journalist was viciously attacked at gunpoint, whilst in April a commentator survived a shooting in a park. At least 60 migrants have died after a rubber dinghy ran into trouble in the Mediterranean Sea, according to survivors. The 25 survivors were picked up by the Ocean Viking, a vessel operated by the humanitarian group SOS Méditerranée. Those on board said they had set off from Zawiya on the Libyan coast several days before being rescued. The engine of the dinghy broke down after three days, leaving the boat adrift without food or water. The survivors said that the victims included women and at least one child. Thousands of people have been left without shelter after a massive fire broke out in a crowded Rohingya refugee camp in southeastern Bangladesh. The fire, which is now under control, engulfed some 2,000 shelters at Cox’s Bazar camp on Sunday. It is estimated that about 12,000 people, most of whom escaped violence in neighbouring Myanmar, have had their accommodation destroyed. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
