George Santos, the disgraced former Republican congressman, is facing up to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to two federal counts of fraud. Santos, 36, appeared in court in Central Islip, New York, on Monday and admitted wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing the identity of campaign staff and misusing campaign funds. The judge estimated a sentencing range between six and eight years. The guilty plea cements the downfall of the novice New York politician, who was expelled from Congress last year after a brief, scandal-plagued tenure. Israel said the vast majority of more than 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran were intercepted overnight. The attacks – which drew international condemnation – marked the first time Iran has targeted Israel directly from its own soil. It is unclear how Israel plans to respond, but war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has said it will “exact a price” for Iran’s attack when the timing is right. The boss of the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike has said he is “deeply sorry” for the global IT chaos caused by a flawed software update to Microsoft’s Windows operating system which was provided by his company. For nearly two weeks, Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory in the Kursk region. It marks the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has been fighting inside Russia – and for many Russian people, it is cause for alarm. Russia’s President Putin has said there are no plans to capture the country’s second city Kharkiv, after Russian troops crossed the border into north eastern Ukraine. The Russian leader said his forces were advancing in order to protect the Russian border region. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted that there were issues with military staffing and morale, saying a number of existing brigades were empty. World leaders have called for restraint in the Middle East, after a missile strike on Iran at a site close to nuclear facilities. It took place at Isfahan in the centre of Iran, where there is an airbase, several nuclear sites, and a missile factory. US officials called it an Israeli missile strike. The bodies of six hostages held in Gaza have been retrieved from the Khan Younis area, Israel’s military has said. A statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Haim Perry and British-Israeli Nadav Popplewell were recovered on Monday.
