Four Russian naval vessels – including a nuclear-powered submarine and a frigate – have arrived in Cuba, in what is seen as a show of force amid tensions with the West over the war in Ukraine. The vessels are anchored at the Havana Bay – some 90 miles (145km) from the US state of Florida. The government of Haiti declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday after armed gangs stormed a major Port-au-Prince prison, leading to the killing of at least 12 people and the escape of about 4,000 inmates. More than 150,000 people have fled the Gazan city of Khan Younis since Monday, two UN agencies have said. Khan Younis has been the focus of a new Israeli military offensive, which it says is aimed at combating “efforts by Hamas to reassemble its forces there”. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to reject any sanctions on the country’s military, after reports that the US plans to cut aid to one unit. It comes after the Axios news site reported that the US would target Israel’s Netzah Yehuda battalion over alleged human rights violations in the occupied West Bank.
