The St. Louis Blues weren’t the only team interested in signing Philip Broberg to an offer sheet, at least according to his agent, Darren Ferris.
Ferris told TSN’s Ryan Richaug that multiple teams are willing to give the defenseman an offer sheet, adding that the Oilers’ offer to Broberg was for two years at $1.1 million per year.
Broberg, 23, was offered a two-year contract worth $4,580,917 per season by the Blues last week, leaving the Oilers seven days to pay the same signing bonus.
The Oilers chose not to match the Blues’ offer sheets for both Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway on Tuesday. The team received a second-round pick in exchange for Broberg and a third-round pick in exchange for Holloway. At the same time as announcing their decision, the Oilers also announced additional trades to acquire promising defenseman Paul Fisher and a 2028 third-round pick from St. Louis in exchange for future considerations.
Broberg saw limited playing time with the Oilers last season — then-general manager Ken Holland denied giving his camp permission to seek a trade while Broberg was playing in the AHL — but he did eventually get playing time in the playoffs and was a regular in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.
The 2019 first-round draft pick appeared in 12 games with Edmonton during the 2023-24 regular season, recording two assists, and added two goals and one assist in 10 postseason games, appearing in all seven games of the Stanley Cup Final. He averaged 15 minutes, 47 seconds of ice time during the playoffs.
Broberg is currently the Blues’ fourth-highest paid defenseman, behind Justin Faulk, Torey Krug and Colton Parayko, all of whom are under contract for $6.5 million.
