The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will be moved from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to political unrest in the country.
The ICC confirmed that all future matches will be played in the UAE and the tournament will go ahead as originally scheduled, starting as scheduled in October.
The matches are scheduled to be held at stadiums in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to October 20. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will continue to play a key role in hosting the tournament in collaboration with the UAE.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said he was disappointed the tournament could not be held in Bangladesh and acknowledged the efforts of the BCB in preparing for the tournament.
“It is disappointing that Bangladesh cannot host the Women’s T20 World Cup as I know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was keen to host a memorable event,” Allardice said.
He further explained that despite the Bangladesh Football Federation’s determination to go ahead with the tournament, travel advisories issued by several of the participating teams’ governments made it impractical for the tournament to be held in Bangladesh.
Allardice also assured that Bangladesh would retain the hosting rights and expressed his hopes for upcoming ICC events in the country.
He expressed his gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board (BCB), the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and the Zimbabwe Cricket Board for their generous offer to host the tournament. “We look forward to these two countries hosting an ICC global event in 2026,” he added.
