According to The Athletic, Scott McTominay will not head to Fulham due to Burnley’s looming bid for Sander Berge.
The United player has been a hot topic this summer but the £30 million fee United are asking for is a stumbling block for most fans, with reports also suggesting he is reluctant to leave Old Trafford.
United themselves are also looking to strengthen their midfield and had reportedly had an bid for Berge rejected by Burnley, before news broke last night that Fulham had completed the deal.
So when the Cottagers received an update on the situation from the folks at The Athletic this morning, they were told: “Fulham have also renewed their interest in McTominay, having previously submitted a bid below United’s valuation of at least £25m, but ultimately landed Sander Berge, agreeing a deal for £20m plus £5m on Monday.”
‘Fulham have agreed to the move after it became clear McTominay wanted to wait for offers from other clubs.’
The news will be a double blow for United, who remain in the running to sign the Scotsman.
The media outlet reported: “Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has travelled to England to meet McTominay face-to-face and progress is being made, but reports in Italy that personal terms have been agreed with the player are false.”
Italian media have also consistently reported that Napoli will not match United’s £30 million transfer fee and that any offer would probably be contingent on the sale of Victor Osimhen.
Turkish clubs remain keen on McTominay, with the report saying Galatasaray have “made an attractive offer on personal terms” and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce have also been mentioned.
The Athletic also report that the Premier League is still interested in McTominay.
‘Everton will have a new opportunity in the Premier League but with limited funds they will need to be creative with their transfer plans,’ the publication claims.
The report concludes that any deal could be made at the last minute, leaving United fans to wonder whether there would be time to find a replacement for McTominay if he leaves.
Christian Eriksen has also reportedly been told to find a new club and with Berge now out of the squad, it all seems dependent on the signing of PSG’s Manuel Ugarte, but even if that goes ahead, United’s central midfield options could be very limited.
