Editor’s note: In consideration of recent and upcoming portrayals in entertainment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members, the Church released the following statement on August 16 via ChurchofJesusChrist.org titled “When Entertainment Media Distorts the Faith.”
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like other prominent global religious organizations, is often the focus of the entertainment industry. While some portrayals are fair and accurate, others rely on stereotypes and egregious misrepresentations that are in poor taste and impact the lives of people of faith.”
“While this is not new, many recent productions depict lifestyles and practices that are clearly at odds with the teachings of the Church, and some irresponsibly misrepresent the safety and behavior of our volunteer missionaries. While we understand that some in the media have a strong interest in the Church, we are disappointed to see portrayals that rely on sensationalism and inaccuracies and do not fairly and fully reflect the lives of our members and the sacred faith they cherish.”
“Millions of Church members around the world are deeply committed to family, loyalty, service, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. We invite all to consult trusted sources and listen to the voices and authentic experiences of individuals and families who find great joy and satisfaction in living these principles.”
“The true story of our faith is best seen in the lives of the countless people who strive daily to follow our Savior, Jesus Christ.”
