AI-powered geospatial intelligence company Bayanat and satellite communications company Yasat have launched the UAE’s first low-earth orbit (LEO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite.
The satellite was launched on Friday from Vandenberg Space Center aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11. The launch, in collaboration with SAR specialist ICEYE, marks a major milestone for the UAE’s space ambitions.
SAR satellites use radar to create detailed images of Earth. This technology can take high-resolution images day or night, in all weather conditions, making it extremely useful for tasks such as monitoring natural disasters and observing environmental changes.
The satellite is part of the Earth Observation Space Programme, which aims to build a constellation of SAR satellites that will provide real-time geospatial data essential for monitoring and disaster management.
The UAE satellite has established communications and initial operations are underway.
Space42 Merger
This latest milestone also follows the announcement by Bayanat and Yasat of a proposed merger of the two Abu Dhabi-headquartered, ADX-listed companies in the second half of 2023. The enlarged combined company will be called Space 42.
The merger aims to create a leader in AI-powered space technology in the MENA region. Bayanat and Yasat shareholders approved the merger in April this year, and it now needs to receive regulatory approval before it can be officially approved.
“The SAR constellation to be launched over the next three years will expand our presence as a multi-orbit satellite operator, including geostationary and low-earth orbit satellites, as well as develop satellite manufacturing capabilities in the UAE,” said Ali Al Hashemi, Yahsat’s group CEO.
Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, added: “The launch of our first satellite marks a much-anticipated milestone for both our collaboration and the UAE. This is a triumphant moment for Bayanat and a decisive step towards our future as Space42.”
