The Egyptian Cabinet announced on Saturday that a consortium led by Masdar and Infinity Power will build a 200-megawatt wind farm in Egypt’s Gulf of Suez.
The agreement, signed at a ceremony in the city of New Alamein and attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, is the latest in a series of agreements aimed at boosting Egypt’s renewable energy sector.
The signing ceremony was also attended by Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Al Jaber.
The agreement reflects Egypt’s strategy to maximise the role of renewable energy in its energy mix and encourage private sector involvement in the construction of solar and wind farms.
The agreement was signed by Mohamed El Khayat, Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority, Salah Ezzat, Chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, Nayyer Fouad, Managing Partner of Infinity Power, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.
Under the agreement, the consortium will develop, finance and operate the project, which is expected to begin commercial operations in October 2026. The project will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix and strengthen the country’s efforts towards achieving its renewable energy targets.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Madbouly stressed his determination to implement more targeted renewable energy projects as part of the country’s plan to expand electricity generation from sustainable sources and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
“There is a strong belief that Egypt’s energy future lies in renewable energy. It is therefore important to explore ways to integrate as much renewable energy as possible into the power grid,” Madbouli said.
Esmat added that the project is in line with the government’s plans to develop the renewable energy sector in order to maximise revenue, utilise available natural resources and reduce the use of fossil fuels, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
“We are pleased to work with the UAE’s Masdar, a leading company in the renewable energy sector, to implement this important project,” the minister said. “The country has adopted an ambitious program to strengthen its power sector in all areas by maximizing the utilisation of renewable energy resources and encouraging investment in the sector.”
