The owners of Lakeside Plaza Shopping Center are planning to relocate a Dollar Tree store to a mall in Salem, according to city records.
Salem city planners voted July 10 to approve the plan, allowing a small addition to be built at the rear of the mall to house the retailers. There are already 15 Dollar Trees in and within 25 miles of Salem, according to the company’s website.

Dollar Tree is one of the better-performing store brands in the Virginia-based chain, which also owns Family Dollar, but has closed many of its Family Dollar locations. The Department of Justice fined Dollar Tree $41.7 million in February for a rat infestation at a Family Dollar warehouse in Arkansas. After fumigation, the building contained 1,270 dead animals, according to the Associated Press.
