According to SaharaReporters, EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, clarified that the recent downtime was not due to a security breach but due to routine maintenance and upgrades to the agency’s social media platforms.
Oyewale said:
“The official Twitter account has been unavailable for three consecutive days, spurring speculation that it may have been compromised by a group of suspected cybercriminals.”
Fraud suspects threaten cyberattack on EFCC
The disappearance of the EFCC’s X (formerly Twitter) handle comes just days after a group of suspected internet fraudsters threatened to launch cyber attacks on the anti-corruption agency.
The threat, which emerged on Reddit and other online forums over the weekend, was a response to the EFCC’s aggressive crackdown on online fraud, according to People’s Gazette.

Some people alleged that they were blackmailed by anti-corruption officials during these operations.
The EFCC has intensified its efforts against internet fraud in recent months, conducting raids on hotels and university dormitories to curb the growing number of fraudulent activities.
Anti-corruption activists support the efforts, saying online scams tarnish Nigeria’s image and erode the trust of hard-working citizens.
However, checks by Legit.ng on Thursday afternoon revealed that the EFCC’s main website and other social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram were not affected.

In a separate development, Legit.ng reported that Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Jalal Alabi, is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
On Thursday morning, August 15, NAHCON’s Secretary-General, Abdullahi Kontagora, was also detained by agents of the anti-corruption agency.
