According to Lyall Thomas, Spanish top-flight side Getafe are “among the clubs keen” to sign Tottenham’s Ashley Phillips on loan for the 2024/25 season.
Thomas said the club “may be open to” allowing the teenager to move out on loan again before the deadline at the end of this month.
Phillips enjoyed a successful loan spell at Championship side Plymouth Argyle last season, making 20 appearances in all competitions for the south west side and earning a call-up to the England Under-20 squad in the process.
The Madrid-based La Liga club will undoubtedly be a step up for Phillips and a good test for him as he aims to continue his development.
The 19-year-old, 6-foot-4 defender featured in Tottenham’s first three pre-season friendlies against Hearts, Queens Park Rangers and Vissel Kobe, playing 45 minutes in the first two games and 24 minutes against Vissel Kobe, but has not been named in the match squad since.
Getafe manager Jose Bordalas is known for his defensive set-up and excellent leadership skills without the ball, which could suit Phillips and his style of play, and he could work alongside experienced defenders like Domingos Duarte and Gené, both of whom the young Tottenham defender could learn from.
Phillips joined the club from Blackburn Rovers last summer for a fee of £2 million and was named in several Premier League matches as well as making several appearances for the Under-21 team in the Bristol St. Motors Cup before being loaned to Plymouth in January this year.
Despite the increased fixture density this season, it has been difficult for Phillips to get much first-team minutes and a loan move to a top-flight side could be just the experience he needs, but Getafe are at a much higher level than Plymouth and hopefully he can get the right matches he needs to develop as much as possible.
