It was a sensational morning in Australia as this year’s Academy Awards nominations were announced, with Mad Max: Fury Road receiving 10 nominations including Best Director for George Miller, and Carol’s Cate Blanchett coming in second for Best Actress.
Miller’s epic post-apocalyptic thriller is the second-most nominated film in the awards after “The Revenant” with 12 nominations, and both films will be competing for Best Picture against “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn,” “The Martian,” “Spotlight” and “Room.”

Cate Blanchett’s beautifully poised performance in Todd Haynes’ gay romance Carol earned her seventh Academy Award nomination, putting her on the same level as Hollywood greats Greer Garson, Ingrid Bergman, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda and Dustin Hoffman.
But it would be a tall order for Blanchett to win her third Oscar, with “Room” star Brie Larson, who won a Golden Globe earlier this week, being the heavy favorite.
Also on the shortlist is 69-year-old Charlotte Rampling, who after an illustrious career spanning five decades earned her first Oscar nomination for her sensitive performance in the brilliant husband-wife drama 45.
Blanchett’s “Carol” co-star Rooney Mara will also be competing against Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet and rising star Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) in the best supporting actress category.

As expected, “The Revenant”‘s Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for best actor for his physically demanding performance as a 19th century trapper who is mauled by a bear and left for dead by his colleagues.
This is DiCaprio’s first Oscar win, and his fellow nominees, Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), will be practicing their congratulatory claps and smiles.
And sentimental favourite Sylvester Stallone secured the Best Supporting Actor award for his moving performance in the hit Rocky sequel, Rocky.
Although Star Wars: The Force Awakens missed out on a Best Picture nomination, it did rank highly in the technical categories with five nominations.

Like every year, there are films that get ignored in every category, but the biggest one to go is “Carol,” which has been rave reviews from critics since its release at Cannes and was considered a front-runner for this year’s Best Picture award.
The film was nominated for six awards but incredibly missed out on Best Picture and Best Director, while Brooklyn was nominated for Best Picture but only received two nominations: Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Let’s start the discussion.
The 88th Academy Awards will be held on February 28th.
