Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said he “raised quite clearly” the issue of China’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Rai News reported.
Meloni said Beijing was not interested in supporting Russia’s industrial potential.
“We clearly raised the issue of China’s support for Russia,” Meloni said of his talks with the Chinese side, adding that “we tried to think together about what interests each side has.”
“I don’t think China, as we know, is interested in supporting Russia’s industrial potential at this stage, even if it doesn’t directly intervene,” Meloni said.
The Italian prime minister said he expected China to “play a leading role” in resolving the war in Ukraine. Speaking at his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Meloni said: “President Xi said yesterday that China is always committed to peaceful coexistence between ethnic groups. I hope that steps will be taken in this direction.”
Meloni met with Xi on July 29 and also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, after announcing plans to “reset” economic ties with Beijing.
