If you love sampling, but find records a bit dated and most sample packs boring, you might have a blast with Samplette. This website turns YouTube into a nearly infinite sample source right in your browser, but be warned that it doesn’t offer any support for clearing samples.

It’s no secret that YouTube has become one of the go-to sources for samples for many producers, but the quality of the samples is often not the best. In fact, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay of Justice said in a recent interview that when it comes to samples, they sometimes prefer the low-quality “crunch” of many YouTube videos over the pure sound of a recording.

But finding good samples on YouTube can be really time-consuming. This has to do with the constant ads, but also with YouTube’s limited search functionality. Wouldn’t it be great for virtual record hunting if videos started randomly and YouTube always played content with background music? Also, it would be really useful if there were more filter options for genre, release date, key, tempo (even tap tempo). That’s where Samplette comes in.
Samplette turns YouTube into an infinite sample source right in your web browser
Samplette is a website that has been around for a while, but is making a comeback. When you load the page, it starts with a randomly selected music video, which might be perfect for record diggers and sample hunters. You can also use Sampette’s filters to narrow down your sample roulette. Plus, you can view metadata for any song directly from Spotify and Discogs.

Samplette is so simple, and exploring new music is so much fun, that it keeps me coming back to the site again and again. Two things might ruin the fun a bit, but at least one of them is manageable: there’s no official way to save and download music from YouTube, so it would be even better if you could route the audio signal from your browser and YouTube directly into your DAW. However, there are various tools for routing system audio, such as Audiomovers and Inject, as well as plugins like the free WebSampler.

However, if you plan on releasing a track that uses a sample, the legal situation can become a bigger problem – if you haven’t cleared the sample with permission from all parties involved. Using samples without the other artist’s permission can get you into trouble, and it can get pretty expensive.
Unfortunately, Sampette doesn’t save you the trouble and effort of clearing individual samples. There are easier paid solutions, like Tracklib, which offers a huge catalog of songs you can use as samples and ways to help with the clearance, but if you’re just looking for fun, the free websites will do the trick.
