West Ham United are reportedly considering a move for Nigerian-born centre-back Jordan Torunariga from Belgian club KAA Gent, according to Tuttmercatoweb.
The 26-year-old defender has emerged as a target for the Hammers as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of next season.
Tornaliga impressed in the 2023/24 season, making 44 appearances in all competitions for Gent.
The Nigerian international was a dominant presence in defence, helping his Jupiler Pro League side keep five clean sheets in 34 league matches and win 57% of their duels, recording 2.46 tackles and 1.77 interceptions per 90 minutes.
Tornariga is excellent on the ball, recording 5 progressive passes and 1.05 progressive carries per game.
His consistent performances, physical attributes, ability on the ball and experience attracted the attention of several clubs including West Ham, Crystal Palace and Leeds United.
Tornaliga’s contract at Gent expires next year, making him an attractive candidate for clubs looking for cost-effective reinforcements to bolster their defence.
Initial reports had put the value at around €5 million but with the player entering the final year of his contract, Gent may be more flexible.
Serie A side Monza had reportedly made an offer of between 3 million and 3.5 million euros for Tornaliga but it was rejected.
West Ham are looking to develop a more well-rounded style of football under new manager Julen Lopetegui and Tornariga could be just the right fit.
With time running out before the transfer window closes, the Hammers will need to act quickly to land the highly sought-after defender.
West Ham should consider selling Aguerdo
Given the uncertainty surrounding Nayef Aghert’s fitness and form, West Ham should consider selling the former Rennes defender.
The Moroccan international is a talented defender but has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent play since his arrival.
Tornaliga, on the other hand, is a more reliable and cost-effective option. He is left-footed and could play as a back-up to Max Kilman.
The Germany-born star could also pair with Kilman, who can line up on the right wing of defence.
Selling Aguerd and reinvesting in a player like Tornaliga could be a smart move for the Hammers to build a stronger defensive base.
