Twitter (now called X) has become the most popular social media site, and according to SimilarWeb, it now has more visitors than Facebook and Instagram.
If we look at the most visited websites in the world, X is currently in third place. Only Google and YouTube have more visitors. When Elon Musk acquired the social media giant in October 2022, many felt that this would be the company’s downfall. He fired over 80% of the employees, including the company’s CEO. However, contrary to all claims, Elon has proven himself once again with X’s popularity rising over the past year. Instagram and Facebook are both among the most used social media platforms in the world and held the third and fourth places until X took over in June 2024. The reason for this could also be due to news items related to the upcoming US elections. For some reason, Twitter/X is still the preferred platform for discussions related to these issues and is very useful for getting quick updates on what is going on in the world.
Instagram has tried to roll out a competitor to X in the form of Threads, but it still doesn’t come close to matching Twitter/X. Other highlights from SimilarWeb’s report show that users spend roughly four and a half minutes per visit to X. While users may spend more time on Facebook and Instagram per visit, they visit X more frequently than other social media sites.
Other popular websites that many people visit include WhatsApp for messaging, Wikipedia for information, Reddit for discussions, etc. Read the full SimilarWeb report here.
