Chelsea, like Real Madrid, are known to be beasts in the transfer market. The London club has long had a reputation for spending big money, and even in the current economic climate, they have found and exploited loopholes that allow them to spend more than their rivals. In recent years, Chelsea have made big-money transfers, including Mihailo Mudrik, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Well, this summer Chelsea were offered the right amount of money to sign Real Madrid, with Real Madrid offering just €30 million for Andriy Lunin amid reports that Chelsea were looking for a new goalkeeper and were particularly interested in a Ukrainian player.
But that may be the end of Chelsea’s pursuit of a transfer for Andriy Lunin. Mundo Deportivo are reporting that Chelsea are no longer interested in signing Andriy Lunin this summer. This is due to the fact that Philip Jorgensen has joined Chelsea, leaving the goalkeeper position vacant at Stamford Bridge. This means that the door is now completely closed for Andriy Lunin.
However, this does signal good news for Real Madrid, as Chelsea are well-stocked in the goalkeeping department and are likely to consider selling Kepa Arrizabalaga, who would certainly be interested in signing the Spanish goalkeeper on a permanent basis after impressing on loan last season.
Kepa was behind Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin in the pecking order in the Spanish capital last season but was impressive when he played, but it may ultimately be the Chelsea player who has the last laugh, as he could be given a clearer rotation plan in the Real Madrid squad.
No one is assuming Kepa will be Real Madrid’s first choice – the position will naturally belong to Thibaut Courtois, at least until he retires or leaves the club – but Carlo Ancelotti is fair enough with his rotation rules that Kepa will be given the opportunity to prove himself.
Andriy Lunin’s future is now uncertain, but it’s more likely he will leave Real Madrid than stay. If the right club comes along to sign him, Real Madrid are unlikely to stand in the way of a move. All that can be said with near certainty is that it’s not Chelsea who will sign Lunin for now.
Where do you think Andriy Lunin will play next season?
