A journalist has revealed his theory about what happened to Madeleine McCann, who disappeared aged three from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.
British journalist Mark Williams-Thomas, who visited the Algarve town days after the boy went missing in 2007, gave his version of events on the TV show “This Morning.”
Madeline’s parents, Jerry and Kate, have not given up hope, but the girl, who has a distinctive scar over her right eye, has never been found.
Detectives are now said to be considering the theory that she was abducted by a European human trafficking ring.

“This is a very difficult story to tell now because it’s a story that’s well known to many and has many legal implications,” Williams Thomas told This Morning.
“The morning Madeline disappeared, she [her parents] “I asked Jerry and Kate, ‘Where were you last night?'” he explained.
“Because we know that the twins woke up a few days before she disappeared.
“And as a result, I think Madeline was clearly aware that she was at the tapas bar at the resort.
“What’s interesting is that to get to the tapas bar you actually have to leave the premises, walk along the public road and then come back again.
“And that raises the concerns I have about Madeline, that she woke up in the middle of the night, went looking for Jerry and Kate, and left the apartment.
“Because we know the back patio door was not secure.”

At one point, presenter Phillip Schofield explained to viewers that he had to “legally” leave it there.
Madeleine disappeared from their apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents were dining at a nearby tapas restaurant.
This week Gerry and Kate McCann launched a new legal battle to overturn a Portuguese court ruling that failed to rule them responsible for their daughter’s disappearance.

The couple plan to use funds from the Find Madeleine fund to overturn the verdict and challenge the claims made by former police chief Gonzalo Amaral.
Last month, Portugal’s Supreme Court dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by Amaral over his book, “The Truth of Lies,” which alleged he faked the kidnapping of his daughter.
