When it comes to the new “Deadpool” movie and Madonna, there’s no need to wonder what you just saw.
Ryan Reynolds spoke about how he and co-star Hugh Jackman got the pop icon to agree to use his 1989 hit single “Like a Prayer” in The Wolverine vs. Deadpool. Reynolds and the film’s director, Shawn Levy, revealed all in an interview with SiriusXM’s Jess Cagle.
“I had a personal visit with Madonna where I showed her the scene in which ‘Like a Prayer’ is used,” Levy said.
“I also want to preface this with the fact that they’re not licensing…Madonna doesn’t just license songs, particularly with that song,” Reynolds added.
Levy said it was like meeting “royalty,” while Reynolds revealed how important it was to get Madonna’s approval.
“It was one thing to ask for it, but even more to use it,” he said. “We went and met with her and showed her how, where and why it’s used.”
Madonna, who has experience both starring in and directing films, also offered some suggestions.
“She made a great comment,” Reynolds said. “She saw it. She wasn’t kidding. [she said]”‘I’ve got to do this.’ And oh my goodness, that’s exactly what she did.”
It also didn’t help that one of Madonna’s sons is a Deadpool fan, according to Levy.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters on Friday.
