On Sunday, July 21, 2024, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke about the importance of peaceful coexistence on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The UAE is home to more than 200 nationalities living side by side, all contributing to the development of our country. Safety and security are the foundations of our society, and we encourage all who call the UAE home to uphold the principles of peaceful coexistence and equality.

“The UAE is home to more than 200 nationalities living side by side, all contributing to the country’s ongoing development,” he said in the post.
“Safety and security are the foundations of our societies,” he added. The UAE president went on to encourage “all who call the UAE home to uphold the principles of peaceful coexistence and understanding.”
Did you know the UAE has a Ministry of Tolerance? The UAE established the Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence in 2016 as a reminder that tolerance is not something to be taken for granted, but something that must be cultivated and maintained through the efforts of individuals, organizations and governments.
In 2016, on the occasion of the 45th UAE National Day, the UAE president declared the UAE a country of tolerance, peace, cultural diversity and coexistence. He added that UAE laws “guarantee respect and dignity for all and criminalize hatred, racism and all forms of discrimination.”
The UAE received praise from Pope Francis ahead of his first visit to the country in 2019, when he sent warm greetings to the people of the UAE. In a video posted by the Vatican on YouTube, Pope Francis sent warm greetings to the people of the UAE and said he was “pleased to visit a country that strives to be an example of coexistence.” In the video, Pope Francis also described the UAE as “a place where many people can work and live in safety, while respecting their diversity.”
The year was declared the “Year of Tolerance” by then UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who stressed the importance of creating a tolerant society and human communication. Speaking at the proclamation, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the “Year of Tolerance” is an extension of the Year of Zayed (celebrated in 2018) and upholds the same values that the late Sheikh Zayed established among the people of the UAE.
