Concerns are growing within the Democratic Party about whether President Joe Biden can win against former President Donald Trump, leading some Democrats to consider asking Biden to drop out of the election. Raymond James Washington policy analyst and managing director Ed Mills joins Morning Brief to discuss this shifting political landscape.
Mills said it was “very clear” that some Democrats want Biden out, but “it’s also very clear that Biden wants to stay in the race,” explaining that Biden has secured the delegate count he needs to become the nominee ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August.
“If he wants to be the nominee, he has the ability to be the nominee unless the delegates decide to change the rules, which would create a very sticky situation,” Mills said.
Biden’s view is that this is the same group that ousted him in 2016 and “gave birth to Donald Trump in the first place,” Mills told Yahoo Finance. But if a new Democratic presidential candidate emerges, they’ll face the tough task of shifting the tone from Biden’s weaknesses to Trump’s unpopularity, Mills said.
