Dillon received five proposals from law firms seeking to become the town’s next attorney.
Town Manager Nathan Johnson said the Dillon Town Council will consider five responses to the town’s request for proposals for a new attorney at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 23.
The resignation of the town’s former attorney, Attorney Kelly, was effective July 12. Attorney Kathleen Kelly had announced her resignation a month earlier after the Dillon Town Council held a meeting that went against her advice.
Johnson said not having a town attorney could hinder the town council’s ability to do its job because documents submitted to the town council must first be reviewed by the town attorney’s office.
In an ideal timeline, Johnson said the Town Council would consider candidates at its next meeting and schedule interviews with the candidates for its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13. A new town attorney could then be approved at the Town Council’s Tuesday, Aug. 27 meeting, Johnson said.
Kelly submitted a 30-day letter of resignation from his office last month after council members disagreed with his legal advice at the June 13 town council meeting. He had advised that there could be constitutional issues with allowing certain religious groups to use the town-owned amphitheater but not others. But the town council ultimately decided to reverse course after voting to allow Dillon Community Church to hold Sunday services in the amphitheater.
