Social platform X (formerly Twitter) is back in Brazil, more than a month after its initial suspension.
The country’s Supreme Court yesterday said in a statement (translated by CNBC) that Elon Musk’s company “has complied with the conditions set by the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, and that the platform will once again be used in Brazil.” It could be used by people.”
X also shared a post on his Global Government Affairs account, saying: “X is proud to return to Brazil. Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our essential platform has been paramount throughout this process. We will continue to protect freedom, within the bounds of the law, wherever we operate.”
The ban on X in Brazil follows an investigation into Mr. Musk and the platform’s contribution to the spread of hate speech and misinformation, which violates the country’s federal laws.
Mr. Musk refused to comply with Brazilian regulations on the issue, including the requirement to have a legal representative for X in Brazil, ultimately leading to the platform’s ban on August 31st.
Last month, we spoke with Brazilian indie developers about how the X ban will affect their operations.
“While Twitter/X is an important tool for reaching a global audience, we support Elon Musk’s disregard for Brazilian law,” Rogue Snail community and social manager Luciana Guerrero said at the time. The decision of our judiciary requires the following: It urged them to comply with local regulations, including blocking accounts associated with individuals convicted of spreading disinformation or attacking democratic institutions.
“This is not about censorship or free speech, it’s about compliance with legal orders. Courts such as the one that created an exception for Twitter/X and failed to block the account Mr. Musk was found guilty of in a lawsuit. Allowing them to ignore the order would set a dangerous precedent, allowing major fintech owners to treat our country as a testing ground with impunity.”
