π A Super League that could save college sports
(Amy Monks/Yahoo Sports)
As SEC and Big Ten leaders prepare to host a historic summit between the two industry powerhouses in Nashville on Wednesday and Thursday, an underreported undercurrent is driving the discussion: “Project Rudy.”
College football “Super League”: A group of investors from investment firm Smash Capital and former Disney executives are pitching to invest $9 billion in funding as part of a 70-school football league, with 30 powerhouse schools in the league. I met with sports directors and others.
The Super League (dubbed Project Rudy after Notre Dame’s famous walk-on Rudy Ruttiger) would maintain the Power Four, expand the postseason, overhaul the schedule, and gradually A revenue sharing system will be established.
This plan is built around two rather simple concepts. One is to eliminate all games against Group of 5 and FCS opponents, placing more games between power conference programs, and to bring media rights for 70 schools under one agreement. It’s about integrating.
“The argument is that everyone gets saved,” one power conference AD ββtold Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.
Project Rudy’s losses are as follows:
College sports are in a vulnerable position as court decisions and public perception shift against the traditional model of amateurism. At the heart of the issue is growing pressure to share the wealth of the NCAA’s most profitable football programs equitably with high-level football players. For decades, the program has used its profits to subsidize all other sports, pay millions of dollars to coaches and pay for construction. Fancy equipment.
Sensing the fragility of the sport and concerned about its future, external bodies are making money while creating a more specialized model to replace the current crumbling structure of a bygone era. They are rallying together to provide funding to schools that are starving.
As major college athletics conferences (reluctantly) burst from their façade of amateurism, Project Rudy teeters on a gathering of Big Ten and SEC leaders.
This multibillion-dollar new idea further escalates the budding partnership between the two leagues and accelerates what some believe are inevitable changes in both revenue generation and distribution. I’m trying. Two men are at the center of the debate: SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti.
“The Smash Capital idea is great,” says one SEC school administrator. “But we need to convince those two.”

βΎοΈAaron Judge’s postseason struggles
(Elsa/Getty Images)
Aaron Judge is almost certain to win his second MVP award this season, but the Yankees may be in trouble if they don’t get that version of him in the batter’s box soon.
Strikeout Machine: Judge has one hit and four strikeouts in seven at-bats this postseason, with 70 strikeouts in 46 playoff games for a strikeout rate of 33.8%. This is the second-worst number in MLB history among players with at least 200 postseason at-bats.
He used to be able to get all the strikeouts because he was doing so much damage in his other at-bats, but he posted a .910 OPS in 27 playoff games from 2017 to 2019.
However, he has not been very good in his last 19 playoff games dating back to 2020, posting an abysmal .143 average and .559 OPS, with nearly three times as many strikeouts (29) as hits (11).
And tonight’s matchup could be similar. Judge is 0-8 all-time against tonight’s Royals starter, Seth Lugo. This includes 0 wins and 3 losses, including two strikeouts this season.
Freshpod: Can the Judges withstand the pressure of the postseason?
