If you have a decision coming up at some point in the future, there are ways for the answer to reveal itself before you formally decide. For the Steelers, the decision to go back to QB1 may have meant just that.
Russell Wilson is getting healthier and healthier. Justin Fields was never given the starting job. It won’t be on the bench.
And there may come a time when he will be benched for something other than benching.
The Steelers lost their second straight game. Fields wasn’t particularly sharp against the Cowboys on Sunday night, but Dallas narrowly won despite outscoring Pittsburgh by a wide margin. With a game against the Raiders next up, it might be time to give Wilson a break before a pair of prime-time games against the New York/New Jersey team.
Coach Mike Tomlin meets with reporters every Tuesday. The quarterback situation will likely be the subject of the first question, unless Tomlin brings it up in his opening remarks (which he may do).
Either way, the door was open for Wilson to play. He’s still a starter. With the offense in need of some spark, now might be the time to start him.
Whether it makes a difference remains to be seen. This running game is much different than the beast-mode attack Wilson enjoyed in Seattle. Moving the chain on the ground unlocks Wilson’s ability to throw a rainbow down the field in the guise of a handoff.
Anyway, 3-0 became 3-2 and Fields took a bit of a step back. If Wilson is ready, it might be time to give him a shot.
