After the National League Division Series was decided at one game apiece on Sunday, the two AL wild-card teams looked forward to finishing the series and returning home for Game 3 on home soil. They are looking for a road win in Game 2 on Monday. advantage.
In the first game of the day, the Detroit Tigers sent American League Cy Young Award favorite Tarik Skubal to the hills of Cleveland against the Guardians. The 27-year-old pitched well, pitching seven scoreless innings. The problem was that the Guardians pitcher matched all of Skubal’s zeros. The game was a scoreless tie, but Kelly Carpenter scored the only run of Game 2 with a three-run home run in the ninth inning against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase. The series heads to Detroit with a 1-1 lead.
In the nightcap, the New York Yankees will look to take a 2-0 lead against the Kansas City Royals in the Bronx. Alex Verdugo was the Bombers’ star in Game 1, hitting a leadoff run in the seventh inning and saving a run with a highlight-reel catch, helping the Yankees win 6-5. Cole Lagance got the ball for the Royals in Game 2 against Carlos Rodon of the Yankees.
Tigers 3, Guardians 0
In Game 2 of the ALDS, the Detroit Tigers won 3-0 against the Cleveland Guardians on a three-run home run from All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase and Kelly Carpenter in the top of the 9th inning.
During the season, Clase allowed only two home runs and posted a 0.61 ERA. His performance led some to suggest he should be considered for the American League Cy Young Award.
However, the Tigers likely have a winner in Tarik Skubal. The AL Triple Crown champion pitched seven scoreless innings in this game, allowing three hits and eight strikeouts. He did not allow a hit until Josh Naylor led off with a double in the fifth inning.
Detroit also failed to score until the eighth inning and was in danger of wasting Skubal’s efforts. What looked like the game’s best chance to score was wiped out by a diving catch by Steven Kwan, ending the eighth inning.
Matthew Boyd started for Cleveland and pitched 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no runs. Cade Smith, Tim Herrin and Hunter Gaddis also kept the Tigers going with three relief innings.
The series moves to Detroit on Wednesday with Game 3 scheduled for 3:08 p.m. ET.
