Similar to their surprising loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, the San Francisco 49ers suffered a disappointing loss at home to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5. Despite leading by 13 points in the first half, they were quiet in the second half. The Cardinals hit haymaker after haymaker and completed a shocking 24-23 comeback at Levi’s Stadium.
Brock Purdy completed 19 of 35 passes for 244 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Purdy and the 49ers trailed by one point with just over 90 seconds left against the Cardinals. However, the Cardinals tipped Purdy’s pass, leading to an interception on the final drive of the game.
On the ground, Jordan Mason rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries. But a fumble in the red zone late in the fourth quarter defined Mason’s performance against the Cardinals in Week 5.
After the 49ers’ loss, the NFL community on Twitter exploded with reaction. Before the 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in Week 6, let’s take a look at what fans and analysts had to say after the 49ers’ loss on Sunday.

If you were to lose two 10-point leads against your district rival in the fourth quarter*… ~*Unserious*~

A win in Seattle on Thursday night would put the 49ers in first place in the NFC West. That’s why hysterically overreacting to an early-season loss is a waste of time. This league is a marathon competition to see who can build the strongest team.

The 49ers remain as they were in September, an unfinished team with explosive potential, especially on offense. The flaws are obvious. The question is whether we will start consistently delivering complementary performance to minimize defects. They have multiple…

The 49ers were wilting in the heat today. Arizona coped much better than them, established an advantage at the line of scrimmage in the second half, and most importantly, took care of the football. Jordan Mason’s late fumble was the most avoidable offensive mistake for SF. …

This is the second time in three games this season that the 49ers lost with a winning percentage of over 85% in the middle of the fourth quarter.

terrible loss, and #49ers The main staff will be in place for the game against divisional leader Seattle, which will be held in four days.

He sustained some injuries. This game completely blew me away. Now they are quickly gearing up for a big event in Seattle. Is the season approaching? No, because the playoff outlook is a mess. But these are the kinds of games that kill teams.
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) October 6, 2024
It is inexcusable that they failed to score at all in the second half against a poor Arizona team.
— Jerod Brown (@JerodBrown_) October 6, 2024
They suffered two inexcusable losses in the division in the first five games of the season. #49ers You need to look in the mirror now.
— Al Sacco (@AlSacco49) October 6, 2024
Another terrible, terrible loss is #49ers With a short week-long trip to Seattle coming up, they have fallen to 2-3 on the season. Between this game and the Rams game, there were probably the two worst losses of the Kyle Shanahan era.
They are currently 0-2 in the NFC West and 0-3 in NFC games.

Kyle Shanahan is the worst fourth-quarter coach of all time
— B 🅿️ Hill (@B_Phillips8) October 6, 2024
No player has led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter than Kyle Shanahan.
— Grant Cohn (@grantcohn) October 6, 2024
Kyle Shanahan is the most overrated coach in the NFL, but honestly, I don’t know if it’s even close. There’s no one better than him to get out to a double-digit lead.
— Street (@David_Street17) October 6, 2024
I’ve never been on the Shanahan Fire Train, but if it ever goes away, I’ll at least look into ticket prices. This is a total joke and about his terrible second half game plan.

More than a Super Bowl hangover…
I think the 49ers defense has regressed from the past few seasons. They haven’t played well as a unit, their young safeties could be better, and they don’t have a LB2 next to Fred Warner. The pass rush is hit or miss.
This is an attack-driven team and… https://t.co/QTkk5B9jAf

This offense shouldn’t be shut out in half the football.
They have too much talent and too good of a coach to score zero points in the second half.
What a joke
— Akash Anavarathan (@akashanav) October 6, 2024
Yes, the 49ers don’t have CMC in the red zone, but they do have Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle plus Mason. This shouldn’t be such a bad thing. Regression is one thing. This is not regression.
— Jason Aponte (@JasonAponte2103) October 7, 2024
Ultimately, this team is going to make the playoffs considering the NFC situation, but today’s game pretty much showed all of this team’s flaws throughout five weeks.
