What you need to know
YouTube detailed what’s next for Shorts, including the option to record 3-minute videos. Short videos will soon have a “template” icon, giving creators the ability to instantly capitalize on the latest trends with their own personal touch. Other Shorts video updates also include customization of your home feed, community engagement, and Veo’s AI support “later this year.”
October is shaping up to be the month of shorts, as YouTube details its future plans for short-form content.
YouTube highlighted that there will be some updates to short videos later this month, starting with longer videos. Starting October 15th, content creators will be able to create short videos up to 3 minutes long. This length for short videos pertains to videos that feature a square or larger aspect ratio.
It’s worth remembering that Instagram Reels can be up to 90 seconds (one and a half minutes) long, so YouTube delays that time by 30 seconds. However, TikTok allows users to record 10-minute videos within the app.

The YouTube Shorts update also includes new templates. The post says users can find the template by tapping “Remix” on any short video they enjoy. Use this template lets you take a trend or sound clip and use it in your creation.
When it comes to following trends, YouTube has hinted that there will be more “remixes” for videos and music videos on the platform. The post says that “in the coming months” creators will be able to pull “multiple clips” from various sources across YouTube and incorporate them into a single short video.
Customization is gearing up to bring YouTube’s primary home feed to mobile. Shorts can be found everywhere, but they often come in these 2×2 boxes. The platform says it will introduce a “Show fewer short videos” option within the three-dot menu of the short video suggestion box.
Note: YouTube says that if you select this option, you will “temporarily” see fewer short videos in your home feed.
The company also aims to drive more engagement between the community and trending activities through short videos. According to the post, when you pause a short, you’ll see a new option in the top row called “Trending.” This opens a dedicated Short Video Trends page where users can find out what’s new and what’s capturing the attention of viewers.
Additionally, Google will add a preview of the comments section to your Shorts feed, allowing you to see what other users feel about your Shorts without having to open the section.

In today’s post, I reiterated the announcement made at the Made by YouTube event in September about Google’s AI model Veo. The AI software is a video generation model that features “an advanced understanding of natural language and visual semantics.” YouTube has said that including Veo on its platform will benefit Shorts.
Now, the company says Veo will arrive “later this year” with AI generation tools. These options allow users to create backgrounds and create unique concepts that would be too difficult without Veo’s assistance. However, keep in mind that when you use Veo, your short videos will have a content label of “Generated using AI.”
